Karen
I have the 1851 British census (CD) for Warickshire which includes Birmingham. I searched for James Tonks and found only two entries. James Tonks aged 29 was a Jeweller in lodgings in Hockley Street which, on a cuurent map, is only a few hundred yards from Northamton Street in the jewellry quarter. Next door lived John Tonks (29)with his wife and three children.
The second James Tonks was only 10 years old. If you would like copies of the two entries or would like me to do further searches please contact me on bob@vellum.co.uk

Regards

Bob
