this is the information I have so far

William Digby married Esther/hester Ratter in 1817 Bath Somerset England, they had three children, Louisa, Emma, Hannah and William. From my information, William snr died while they were still in England. Esther, Louisa and William came to Auckland, Louisa and Benjamin Tonks got married in Melbourne but he came out to Auckland before her. (No word on what happened to Emma and Hannah)

I have his death notice (orginal) very long but in summary

B Tonks suffered from ill health, on two occasions he made a visit to the old country and travelled through America and visited the principal places of interest in Europe, India, Ceylon and Australia, hoping the change of air and sceen might have the effect of re-stablishing his health.

He was a native of Warwickshire England, born 1832 and was 52 at his death. When he was 19/20 he sailed from Glasgow for Melbouorne then better knkown as Port Phillip. he landed in Melbourne in 1852. He arrived in Auckland in 1855 at the age of 29. He farmed in the Wairoa district but with recuited health found the life too tame and returned to Auckland and became an auctioneer. After some time Mr Tonks was induced to accept an appointment in the public workds department of the Provincial Government and eventually in the Crown Lands department of the General Government, retaining this until the removal of the seat of Govt to Wellington. He was mayor, a member of the house of representative for Auckland City West, he was a member of of the commission of the peach, twice elected an auditor of the BNZ and at the time of his death a director in several local companies and chairman in the NZ Accident Insurance Co, He was also president for everal years of the Auckland Racing Club
