Wow! I'm fairly new to this ancestry stuff, but my research over the last couple of weeks has led me down exactly the path that has been posted here. My mother is a Tonks. Her father was James Herbert Tonks, the only child to reach adulthood of James Ernest Tonks and Marie Caroline Herbert. James Ernest's father was George Tonks. This was all told to me by family members.
Recently I have been researching this and found the birth record for James Ernest, where it stated that his mother's maiden name was Ketteridge. After hours of looking for marriages between George Tonks and Ketteridges, I found a marriage between a George Tonks and a Florence Violet Ketteridge. Just to confirm this was the right Ketteridge, I ordered James Ernest's birth certificate, which confirmed that his mother was Florence Violet Tonks, formerly Ketteridge.
Then on the 1901 census I found Geroge and Florence V. Tonks living together, with George's father, Thomas Tonks. I've followed the census back as far as 1861, and found Thomas' death record too. I've found a christening record online for Thomas Gwinnutt Tonks (the spelling of the middle name varies so much that for the time being I'm happy with the one of the Christening record). It states that Thomas' parents were William Tonks and Mary. Apart from that I knew nothing of them. Thomas Gwinnutt was christened in Dudley, but when I couldn't find any records for his parents there, I didn't want to commit to any of the other possible matches from nearby locations. How did you get past William? Also, how did you find Matha's maiden name?
This isn't just aimed at Kristen by the way, any help would be received VERY gratefully!
