Stringer Tonks was my g-g-g-g grandfather. Up to a few weeks ago, I knew nothing about him. There are lots of accounts, available online, telling of the fatal fight in 1811 when Beale died. What seems less known is that Stringer (his grandmother's maiden name was Stringer! He had another relative called Hung Tonks! They sound quite a crew!),served a few years in prison for manslaughter, as a result. His poor wife stopped having children, for a few years.I wonder how she manged without his basket making and fight money? It was business as usual once he was released; more children came along and he went on to live into his seventies as did she! In the court records, from Stafford assisses, the poor guy a ,couple up the list from Stringer, was sentenced to hang for sheep stealing! Killing someone, albeit by accident, which is debatable when it comes to boxing which I hate ,was obviusly not seen as so grave.
