Harry, thank you for responding to my message.According to Eddie Minthorne, my grandmother's nephew, Harry and Thomas Tonks opened a button factory in New Jersey. My grandmother Nellie and her sisters would sell the buttons their uncles made for $.75 a card (6 buttons on a card).According to the 1891 New Jersey Directory, Harry Tonks lived at 88 Norfolk Road, Newark, NJ and his occupation was listed as a button maker. The information I have for the Tonks family is as follows:
James Tonks, b: about 1828; d: about 3/1908.He was buried in Fairmount Cemetery, 620 Central Avenue, Newark, NJ.He was married to Elizabeth "Betsy" Dukes. She was b: about 1835 and d: about 12/1916.She is also buried at Fairmount Cemetery.James Tonks purchased the plot at Fairmount Cemetery 9/14/1898.Buried in that plot are James Tonks, William Tonks, Walter Tonks, Elizabeth Tonks, Sarah A. Franciso and Nellie Tonks. He paid $200 for 180 sq ft of burial space. The plot is located in Section 4, Lot No. 179.James and Elizabeth had the following children:Sarah A. (my great-grandmother), Thomas, Harry, William, Walter and Elizabeth (per 1870 census).I don't know when the Tonks came here from England.Any additional information you may have, I would greatly appreciate your sharing with me.Thanks again for responding.Sorry I took so long to answer.HOpe to hear from you soon.
