Dear Jack
Thank you so much for your post on Charles Tooley. I just saw it today, 11/06/07. I noticed your last name is Shinnick and I'd like to know if your mother was Nell Shinnick? I think my mother mentioned that her Aunt Nell's last name was Shinnick. I remember her mentioning that last name alot. I was looking down the list you wrote down and I noticed that Florence, my other great grandmother, who was a sister to Lovina, isn't on this list. I am now seriously wondering if she was another man's child. I always assumed that Florence was Charles Tooley's daughter too. I even refer to her as Florence Tooley. Her last surname that she used before her death was Fitzgerald (she married him after her 1st husband Frank Jackson died). She had two daughters with Frank, Dorothy and Lillian Frances. Now I am stumped. I don't know who her father is, but I still think that Sarah Bolger may have been her mother. I know for sure she was one of Lovina's sisters. I see Nellie is on this list that you posted. I printed it out for my mother's records.

My aunt Nan said that Charles was born in Ireland, and that when he made his plan to leave Ireland known to his family, his aristocratic father threatened to disown him. Charles left anyway. If this story that she told me is true, then maybe his family didn't agree to his marriage with Sarah Bolger. Who knows. Your account says he was born in Ontario. Hmmm. I'm not saying I don't believe you, I just now have two different accounts, one from my aunt and now one from you.

There are alot of Tooleys in England. I was looking up the name and it came up in Norfolk or Norwich alot. It goes back to the time of the Domesday Book, and a person or people with that surname is/are mentioned in the Domesday Book. I was looking at and there's a book available on Irish families of Dublin or Co. Dublin, of which there are families with the Tooley name, I think I'll get it. It may be an interesting read.

I hope to hear from you soon. You can reach me at
