I have this from a Gout/Gowt researcher:

In 1810 a George GOWT and Elizabeth GOWT (nee DRAKES)
had a son James, baptised in Sutterton, Lincolnshire, England. In 1831 this James was the witness to the marriage of John TOOLEY and Amy Elizabeth GOUT and James' name was written as GOUT. This James emigrated to the United States in the late 1830's with his family and settled in Michigan. One of his daughters married Horatio L. Birdsall on Oct. 2, 1853 in Milford,
Oakland Co. Michigan. I do not know where this George GOWT came from. The parish records do not show his birth, marriage, death or the baptism of any other children.

I am decendant from this James Gout, who married someone by the name of Mahala, sometimes I saw the name on records as Mahala J. Gout, but I could never find her surname. I know that these people were from the Lincolnshire area. In old family letters it states something about Mahala having a sister who died back in England.

Somehow I feel this Tooley and Gout connection is my only lead.

I see the name Mahala connected with the Tooley name as well. Could have been a popular name around that time. My question would be has anyone seen the surname Gout/Gowt in your researching of the Tooly name?
