The story of the Tooley's is this and dates to the 1600's from England, yes, where Christopher Tooley emigrated to Connecticut. The Tooley generation resided there for many generations and can still be found in the area. There are so numerous land and probate records for this family there that can substantiate them. Several generations later was born Lemuel Tooley. He married, according to town records and had one son. Then married again to Sarah Peard, also a widow, with two children. They lived together and had four children, two being Lemuel and Samuel. When Lemuel senior drwoned in 1790, Sarah remarried to Benjamin Collins. Lemuel and Samuel moved to Lewis County New York, and resided there about 20 years before moving into Renfrew County New York. Samuel of course married Letitia (sp) and Lemuel married twice, the first is unknown and the second Mary Bains (1851 census). Children by the first wife are unknown since marriage records or death records in Lewis County are scarce. Maria Tooley, born abou 1809 was born of the first mother. She remained in Lewis County, New York and married William Illingworth there in 1836. They headed west and she ended up in oregon, where she died in 1894. Alzina, who was born in the 1820's, but not sure which mother she had, married Isaac Houghmaster and headed west. In 1900 she is living in Redlands, California. Lovisa, from Mary Bains, married Robert Condie and lived in Minnesota, alon with sons Sylvester, who moved out west, Lemuel remained in Canada and died there. He lived in Deux Rivers area. Samuel, the son of the first Lemuel remained in Canada. His family, was large and moved about, some in US, some in Canada. The family bible that I have copied seems to be the bible of Sarah Peard Durand Tooley Collins, the mother of Lemuel and Samuel. It appears to be continued by Letetia Tooley, listing her family and some of her grandchildren families. If there is another family bible I do not know of, I am unaware, but would like to see it. I have detailed informationon the ancesty from England, as well as the many of the descendants, however there is a Tooley genealogist who possess much more information on these branches and who they belonged to. I woul dgladly pass anyone interested on to her. I hope this clarifies some documented facts regarding this family. My family comes from Maria Tooley Illingworth.
