Since multiple searches from a variety of source suggest that the Toomey nameis relative rare in the Scranton area, I was wondering whether the late wife and the stepchildren of my very good and dear friend, who is now 89 might be third cousins once removed and fourth cousins respectively of you.
His late wife, Georgianna Doyle Woehl Toekes was a greatgranddaughter of John and Ellen Toomey Connery. Both John and Ellen, separately and then together after their 1871 marriage, resided almost their entire lifetimes in the United States in Scranton until their respective deaths in the early 20th Century.Ellen Toomey was born in Wales in May of 1850 or 1851, depending upon whether one believes an 1851 Wales Census or multiple US censuses, and died 04 SEP 1919 and her death certificate informant, her youngest daughter Alice, reported that Ellen’s parents were Daniel Toomey and Mary Corbett, both of Ireland.
The Lackawanna County records on GenWeb also show that a John Toomey married Alice McConnell in 1888 with parent names Daniel Toomey and Mary ?? Toomey, which are consistent with that of Ellen. Other census record indicate John was born 1853 also in Wales. The 1851 Wales Census for the Daniel and Mary [Corbett] Toomey family also reported that Daniel had an age 24 son named John when Daniel was only 27.,Obviously that is not feasible andthat John in the censu was more conceivably his brother, and so the younger John in the Lackawanna records is very likely a brother of Ellen.
I also found an 1880 US census record for the age 55 widow Mary Toomey living with two of her children, Katie, age 15, and Daniel (same name as her late husband), age 21.Given the typical size of an Irish family and the common surnames, I believe that all of these Toomey descendants, including those you identify are related, but have not yet found that one record that ties them all together.
