I haven't found any proof for it, but I believe that Jacob, Andrew, and Frederick VALENTINE, who were all apparently born in the 1750s and who lived along the state line in Bedford and Allegany Co, are the sons of Jacob VELTIN (1728-??) and Catharina Barbara REISS (1721-??). If that's correct, they were the nephews of Frederick RICE Sr (1728-1808) of Bedford Co and Andrew RICE Sr (1738-1816) of Allegany Co.
It would explain the really intricate connections among these families. Frederick VALENTINE bought his homeplace from Andrew RICE, and his children are extensively intermarried with both the RICE families. (Frederick's own 2nd wife was the daughter of Andrew, though all his children were by a previous wife whose name has never been discovered AFAIK.) Jacob's family also connect to RICE and he personally to Andrew VALENTINE (who had no issue).
Michael TOOTHMAN's mother remains unidentified, but given the connections among these families, I have believed for a long time that she comes from somewhere in the REISS group.
Andreas REISS, c1670/75?-1748 (age 69, but this seems a little young to me); married 1693 at Pfaffenhoffen to Eva EICHMANN or EIDMANN, from Rothbach, c1671-1740. Among their children was
Friederich REISS, 1696-??; married, 1718 at Alteckendorf, to Catharina BURWEILER (1694-??). Their children include
1. REISS Jacob, 1718-1795; married, 1, Catharina MUELLER; emigrated to America, 1750, on BENNET GALLEY, lived Northampton Co, PA, later in NJ. ID proven through signatures.
2. REISS Catharina Barbara, 1721-??; married, 1749 at Pfaffenhoffen, to Johann Jacob VELTIN from Schillersdorf. Probably but not proven to be the same as Jacob VALENTINE, who emigrated to America 1750 on BENNET GALLEY. (In this region of Alsace, VELTIN or FELTIN is usually used for VALENTIN; the names are interchangeable.)
3. REISS Eva Catharina, 1726-??; married, 1756 at Old Goschenhoppen, PA, to Jacob FUCHS or FOX, lived Frederick Co, MD, and Bedford Co, PA. Her father is named in her marriage and this family can be linked with the other REISS in MD.
4. REISS Friederich, 1728-1808; married, 1st, Christina __; 2nd, 1774, Catharina GINSER. Probably emigrated on BENNET GALLEY, 1750, though for some reason he marks rather than signs the passenger list. His signatures in Alsace, 1749, and on his will, 1804, prove his ID conclusively. Lived Frederick Co, MD, and Bedford Co, PA.
5. REISS Andreas, 1738-1816; married, ?1st, Anna __. Date of emigration unknown. Lived Frederick Co and Allegany Co, MD. He can be linked both to Eva Catharina and to Friederich REISS.
This is theory, and so far I haven't been able to prove it. It accounts for the closeness between RICE and VALENTINE, which certainly there is, and also for the frequent use among VALENTINE of the characteristic RICE names Andrew and Frederick. Jacob VELTIN and Barbara REISS married only a few months before emigrating, and they had no children overseas that I can find. So far I haven't found baptisms for any of their children in America, either (nor for any of the other REISS before 1766). I suspect that both Jacob VELTIN and Barbara REISS died early and that their children may have been raised by other family members, but no proof of this either!
