I saw your request requesting the grandparents of of Augustus, son of Henry M. Topham and Rachel Vining of Patterson, LA (2nd wife). Henry's parents were John and Elizabeth Topham. Henry was born in Yorkshire, England in 1815. Henry immigrated to America through Vermont and then on to Louisiana. He married twice, had children by both and died around 1860. The Vining's from Holland, lived in the Dutch Settlement in Patterson. A home in Patterson still goes by that name). You must be from the side of Elizabeth (born 1842) and Joseph Landry that initally settled in Calcasieu Parish.
My grandmother was a Topham and just turned 90 years old. She has a great memory and remembers most of the Tophams. She has many interesting facts about the Patterson Tophams and about the plantation on Bayou Teche they once had and several family members were buried there. Henry bought land from the Broussard family. His plantation ran from Bayou Teche to Grand Lake. He had slaves, house and field servants. His land was lost by his son Augustus who bought out the other heirs to the property. Augustus sold the land eventually to Mrs. Peter Norman and is now part of the Victoria Plantation. Henry and most of his family were buried in a family cemetary on the Plantation. There were no burial records for these people and it was the custom in that time to bury on family land. Those buried were Henry I, William, (his father was Jean Ulyess, my great grandfather), Henry II, Thomas, Caroline, Marie Broussard T., Rachel V.T. and several other family members. The graves can no longer be found as this land has been plowed, planted and replanted many times since the turn of the century. This is all farm and sugar cane land that runs between Bayou Teche and Grand Lake. The Topham family is well recorded in England in churches and courts. Records go back to the 1400's and this recordadation was only true of the prominent familes. By the way, the Broussard got this land initially with large land grants from the Spanish Gov. who was in control of La.gov. at that time.
