Hello,
I also have a trunk that has a name plate on it reading: James S Topham. Trunks & Leather Goods, Washington, DC
I believe he is the manufacturer of trunks & leather goods. I have just began looking for more info on this man too. I did find a site that has a saddle & saddle bags that he made for a famous person. That web site is: www.tfaoi.com/newsmu/nmus86.htm The saddle was made in 1860 as a gift for Franklin Pierce after the Mexican War. I have thought of calling this museum & asking them if they could give me more info on Mr Topham too.
My trunk also has a name that was printed in paint on the lid by the owner of the trunk & it looks like he was a judge. I haven't found out any info about the judge yet either.
Let me know if you find out more info on James S Topham.
