now that is very interesting, Tom, because the kids I see on the census, children of John W. Torrence and Sarah Pelton, are Lafayette W. (abt 1851 NY), Frank (abt 1852 NY), and Charles (abt 1856 NY)
the Peltons and the Ingrahams of course are associated with the "Friend's" group who settled in Jerusalem NY, as are most of the Dains family
I've been trying to find Marcus Lafayette Torrence on the census, but I don't find him until 1880, when he's married to Catherine (and all their children would presumable have married and left home), then I find him buried in the Grove Cemetery in Bath, NY, with wives Catharine and Rebecca (Horton) (Danes) [she was previously married to Nelson Danes]
I did find Marcus on the 1890 "veterans" census, in Steuben County NY
not only have I not found Marcus Lafayette Torrence, I also couldn't locate first wife Catherine, on 1850, 1860, 1870 censuses ... she doesn't show up until 1880, and she dies apparently in June 1880 ...; nor have I located a marriage record for either of his wives !
will try researching these children you've cited, see if there are two different families with sons Lafayette, Frank and Charles; certainly within the realm of possibilities if these two Torrences are closely related
I also need to do some digging into Andrew J. Torrence (b. abt 1815 NY) with wife Ann (b. abt 1812 VT) with children Henry E. and Fayette A.; since they must fit into this family somewhere ..
thanks for that additional information
