Sandgate, VT Torrence Lines
Posted by: Tom Fetters (ID *****5614) Date: January 08, 2010 at 10:58:45
  of 1442

Bob Torrens sent a message back in August of 2000 about how his dad,
Theodore Mabin Torrens
had told him of his granparents
John and Sarah Hamilton Torrens
coming from Ireland in 1851
landing in Philadelphia and migrating up to
Sandgate in Vermont hard by Lake Champlane.

Linde Lunney of Ireland had provided the 1800 census for the area and these Torrance were there:

Ezra Torrance at Sandgate
John Torrance at Sandgate
Lewis Torrance at Sandgate
William Torrance at Sandgate
Joseph Torrance at Arlington, Bennington Co, VT nearby.

Bob is no longer using his old e-mail address, so I am posting this here to see if he happens to find it.

The 1901 US Census for Sandgate, Bennington Co, VT has a listing of his dad and the grandparents.

Teddy Torrence 10
(which would be Theodore)

John Torrence 59 and Sarah Ann Torrence 54
(The parents of Teddy.)

John born in England and Sarah in Ireland.

There is also a older son named Robert Torrence 22

Note that the name is transcribed Torrence, but that Bob uses Torrens.

If John is 59 in 1910, he was born in 1851.
Sarah in 1856.

It should be clear that John And Sarah did not cross the Atlantic in 1851.

It also should be clear that this is really is Bob's dad, Theodore called Teddy, and his grandparents, John and Sarah, in Sandgate just as his dad said. It is just that the 1851 birth year got mixed with the crossing of the Atlantic year.

Linde Lunney's list is now a bit better known:

Thomas Torrence (1749-1842) x 1772 Eunice Lacy (1756-1831) had two children.

Captain Ezra Benedict Torance (1774-1828) x 1793 Jemima Morehouse is clearly the Ezra of 1800 census.

They had 8 children at Sandgate that are known, but would have been check marks in that census.

Lewis Torrence (1785- ) x 1805 Betsy (1783- ) and later second wife 1820 Mary (1786-1861) is the Lewis in the 1800 census.

Lewis and Betsy had 5 children at Sandgate.

I am working on identifying the remaining Sandgate people in the 1800 census list.
