The mention of the 'first three children' in western MA vs. Melvin's location came from the Worchester records.

I've never been to the North East area either, but Dedham is located in Norfolk Co, MA. Norfolk Co is inbetween Worcester and Plymouth.

Of interest is that Melvin's daughter, Lavina was born 1814 in Dedham, so this sustantiates this, tho it's possible they later moved to the location you mentioned for a period of time?:

Melvin TORRANCE b: Sept 10, 1784 Brookfield Twn., Worcester Co., MA, d: Jan 14,1814, md Catherine Severance 1813
Child: Lavina TORRANCE b: 1814 Dedham, Norfolk Co., MA. d: March 1865 Darien, Georgia, md. [Aug 5, 1830 Darien, GA] Laban Mason SMITH b: Sept, 1797 Taunton, Bristol Co., MA. d: October 1883 Darien, GA
