Thank you SO MUCH for this information! I am thrilled to receive this.

If you don't mind, I would like to verify the evidence supporting this:
- the maiden name of Susannah in her marriage to William and
- that the same Susannah first married Stoddard

This is something I long felt to be true, especially since a daughter of William and Susannah Torrance was named Susannah Hardin.

If you have copies of documents, I will gladly reimburse you to receive a copy.

Since you have access to resources I can only wish for (ha!), would you mind checking into one more mystery on this family if you have time?

Various evidence supports the belief that William Torrance was first married to Hepsibah Batcheldor [Brookfield, Worcester Co, Jan 11, 1774]and I would like to find out if this is true.

Both sets of children from the Torrance/Batcheldor marriage and Torrance/Stoddard marriage (listed below) were found living in the same places during the same times in various years.

For instance:

Susannah (Hardin/Stoddard) Torrance is living alone without her children in the 1810 census. It seems as if her children were in Dedham, MA where Melvin (son of William/Hepsibah) lived. This is several counties away.

Susannah Hardin Torrence (daughter of William/Susannah) apparently lived with Melvin when she married John Cleveland.
Susannah H. Torrance-John Cleveland
marriage: 5 Jul 1812 Roxbury, Suffolk

Melvin also married in Dedham, MA and died shortly after. Then his wife remarried and moved to NH to a town near where Susannah & John Cleveland were.

Marriage recorded in Brookfield (pages 268 &. 421:
"Torrance, William and Hipsebah Batchreller"
"Batchreller, Hipsebah [Hepzebeth in int.] and William Torrance."

Brookfield, Worcester Co, Jan 11, 1774
William Torrance (b. 1738/39 Dartmouth, Bristol Co. md.
Hepsibah B. Batchelor (b. July 25, 1741 Brookfield Twn, Worcestor Co].

Don't know who this is at age 24:

Torrence, Hepsibah, Feb 14, 1824, a. 24 [a.23.PR19]

Children of William and Hepsibah Torrance:
-Jeduthan [6/4/1775 Brookfield(md. Eunice Gibbs)]
-John [11/30/1777 Brookfield]
-Polly [12/3/1780 Brookfield]
-Melvin [9/10/1784 Brookfield]

[These births weren't recorded in Brookfield but their baptisms were:
Vol. 1Page 212
TORRENCE Worcester, Brookfield - Birth
Torrence, Jeduthan, son of _____and Hepsibah, bap, Jun 4m 1775 CRI
Torrence, John, son of Williiam & Hepsibah, bap. Nov 30, 1777, CRI
Torrence, Melvin, son of ____and Hepsibah, bap. Sep 10, 1784 CRI
Polly, daughter of William & Hepsibah, bap. Dec 3, 1780 CRI

There were no Torrance deaths recorded in the Brookfield VRs.].

William Terrance {Torrance} married Susannah Stoddard 10/15/1787 Bridgewater,Plymouth, MA

Children: of William Torrance and Susannah Stoddard:
-William M. [1788 Plymouth - 1865 Pembroke (md1. Eleanor Gardner, md2 Deborah Barrel)]
-Elen [1790 (nothing more is known)]
-Robert [1797 Halifax - 1871 Plymouth (md. Betsy Kinder)]
-Susannah Hardin [b. 1792 Plymouth (md. John Cleveland)]

Of interest, is that another William Torrance, b. 1795 - 1855 became a school principal in Keene, NH [which borders Worcester Co, MA]. I have wondered if there was a connection - keeping in mind that for some unknown reason, William Torrance d. in 1800 in NY. His last child with Susannah was born 1792 in Plymouth. This same Susannah (spouse of John Cleveland) also ended up in NH....

Thank you again VERY much!
