I decided to Google Thomas Torrance and Lavina and came up with a family tree. Her name, according to the researcher, was Lavina Quackenbush (though he/she had Lavina b. circa 1833, she more likely was born in NY circa 1824). I used Ancestry.com to find Thomas Torrance – it’s no wonder I could never find the man as they indexed him as Thomas Sowane (I subsequently sent a “name correction” to Ancestry.com).

Like Mary Ann, I found the Torrances in Algonquin, McHenry, IL. Thomas is no longer with the family, so has died or left. Lavina Torrance (36; b. NY; value of real estate, $1500; value of personal property, $1500; no occupation given) lives with children (all Torrances), including:

1. Dewitt (11; b. NH? or NY). In 1880 Dewit E. Torrance is with wife Ada and their children in Eureka, Greenwood, KS and leaves places of birth for father and mother blank, claiming he was b. IL; in 1900 Dewitt E. Torrance is with Ada in the same town, claims he was b. Sep 1848 in MA, with father b. MA and mother b. NY…the 1900 census info seems more reliable than the 1880 and might mean that Thomas and Lavina married in Massachusetts after his Thomas’ first wife, Mary Latham, died in Feb 1847.

2/3. Twins (?) Edridge (9; b. IL) and Jerome (9; b. IL).

4. Mary (7; b. IL). This child is the person in the tree I found using Google; the researcher claimed she was born to Thomas Torrance and Lavina Quackenbush on 21 May 1853 at Palatine, Cook, IL, died (as Mary Russell) on 7 Apr 1927 at Shawnee, Tokeka, KS, and was buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Kansas City, Johnson, KS. If the dates are correct, then Mary’s father, Thomas Torrance, was alive at least until September 1852.

Regarding Thomas and Mary (Latham) Torrance’s son, Albert, it seems he returned to his birthplace in Springfield, MA. I have him in censuses there, including;
1920 U.S. Census, Massachusetts, Hampden, Springfield Ward 1, District 94, "Albert Torrance (74; b. MA; father b. MA; mother b. MA; foreman, tool mfg) and wife Ada (56; b. MA; parents b. MA)," Image 3/55 at Ancestry.com; www.ancestry.com.
