Chapter 2, Alexander and Siblings

Having read all the messages that were posted over the past four months and organizing them into a concise history, I find that the earliest person mentioned is Alexander Torrence.

He is from Generation 5 and he was the first of 12 children.

1 Alexander Torrence (1713-1769) x 1738 Mary Cannon (1719-c1779) of Pelham, MA, Darmouth, New Braintree, MA

2 John Torrance (1717-1804) x Jean Torrance (1729-1803) of Coolnamen; Cumberland Co, PA, Hagerstown, MD

3 Thomas Torrance (1718- ) x 1748 Anna Mitchell of Coolnamen, Woodbury, CT

4 Samuel Torrance (171901788) x 1741 Jemima Parke (1716- ) of Coolnamen; Woodbury, CT

5 Aaron Torrance (1722-1795) x 1750 Susannah Finley (1728-1772) and then 1774 Elizabeth Irwin McConnell (1732- )
of Coolnamen, York; Chester (1750); Fayette Co, PA and Lexington, KY

6 Hugh Torrance (1726-1795) x Jane of Cumberland Co, PA

7 James Torrance (1736-1810) x 1764 Elizabeth Blair (1740- ) and then 1774 Janet Shields of Mifflin Twp, Allegheny Xo, PA

8 Albert Torrance, Jr (1739-1804) x Jenet of Green Twp, Franklin Co, PA "Dunbarton"

9 Elizabeth Isabel Torrance (1747-1837) x John Ferguson of Coneague, PA

10 William Torrance (1744-1828) x 1778 Martha Stull (1757-1829) of Hagerstown, MD; Elizabethtown, Hamilton Co, OH

11 Jean Torrance (1747-1837) x Thomas McKean (1747- ) and then Benjamin Kirkpatrick (1747-1826) of Chambersburg, PA and ben from Hannastown, PA

12 Mary Torrance (1750-1798) x Hugh Wiley, Jr (1750-1805) of Ohio

There you have it. Twelve Torrance siblings, some second generation in America, others newly arrived.

YOUR interest is primarly with Alexander. (I just wanted to show you some of the geographical spread of the family this early.

You have carried William Torrence without siblings. He is in fact the first of 7 Torrence siblings. I will list them here as a time saver:

1 William Torrence (1740-1800) x 1774 Hepsibah Batchelder (1741-1784) of Pelham, MA (1767)and Plymouth, MA and then 1787 Susannah Hardin Stoddard ( -1828) of Pembroke, Plymouth County, MA

2 Thomas Torrence (1742- ) x 1776 Agnes Cochran of Plymouth, MA and then Elizabeth Harris

3 Sarah Torrence (1744-c1765)

4 Joanna Torrence (1747-c1775) x 1772 John Fenton (1750-1818) of Worthington, MA and Rutland Maine.

5 Martha Torrence (1749- ) x 1777 Matthew Rinker

6 Alexander Torrence (1752- ) x 1771 Priscilla Heket

7 Mary Torrence (1754- ) x 1774 John Rinker of Belchertown, MA

You will see a number of candidates to explain some of the mystery Torrence folks you found.

That's it for today.

Hope this helps.

Tom Fetters
