Well, I've had my excitement for the day!!! For many, many years I have been researching this Torrance line because my husband is a direct descendant. For the past 15 mos. or so I have concentrated on this line pretty exclusively. Luke G. has been a little elusive, and I always wondered what the "G." stood for. A few years ago it occurred to me that his middle name might be his mother's surname. However I could never find anything to support this. This a.m., while waiting for my coffee to brew, I sat down at my computer and did a search (yet again) for Luke G. Torrance. When the results came up I sat gaping, and with my heart hammering, hardly daring to believe what I saw. The first result was, "Luke Gibbs Torrance, Voter Registration on 29 July 1871 in San Francisco, California." This person was b. 1817 in Massachusetts, further verifying that it is probably the right person. This also possibly verifies the story of Phyllis Helen Withycombe Stump (whose mother was a Torrance) that about 1869 Luke left for California and was never heard from again.
Soon I will have a whole cartload of Torrance info (once it is sorted and input) to share. Some of it has already been discovered but there is new info, along with more questions to be answered, of course.
