I'm afraid that you've found a very old query of mine when I was totally confused about the Elizabeths in question..

1st: John and Johann are one and the same people... Johann was his German name. They used John when he came to America.

2. John/Johann, Balzar and Margareta Elizabeth were, by all accounts sent to me, believed to be siblings. Margareta Elizabeth DETTERO mar. Valentine "Felty" CLEMMER. John DETTERO mar. Mary HOFFMAN..

3. The Elizabeth Clemmer DETHEROW/DETTERO that drowned was the daughter of Valentine "Felty" CLEMMER and Margareta Elizabeth DETTERO CLEMMER.. [the dau., not the mother, drowned!]

According to the OUR KIN book, by Laban Miles Hoffman, he lists all of those that drowned during that trip. There is also a website that has the corrections to the book.. Go to:

No where does it list that the daughter, Elizabeth "Lizzie" CLEMMER DETHEROW [mar. John DETHEROW, JR... son of John/Johann DETHEROW, Sr. and Mary HOFFMAN] did not drown [around 1827]..

Lizzie CLEMMER DETHEROW mar. her 1st cousin, John DETHEROW, Jr...

I am searching for any info on his [John Jr.] 2nd marriage. We believe that Lizzie and John Jr. were the parents of my gggrandfather and his 2 brothers. After Lizzie drowned, John remarried. After John died, the stepmother sent the 3 boys away.. Time period is somewhere around 1838-1840...

Hope this helps,

ps: contact me privately at

and I can send you emails addresses of others [Clemmers and Detherows/Totherows] who have done more investigating regarding the drowning matter. I can also send you more info on the CLEMMERs..
