In the early days county recorders spelled names the way they sounded. Different folk seemed to hear differently. Also a lisp, stutter or accent could also make a difference. I've counted about 53 different spellings which includes the ones that start with a D rather than a T. I myself descend from John Dettero/Totherow/Tetherow of Gastonia NC area and his wife Mary Hoffman, via their son Michael a& his wife Barbara Shrum/Schramm/Schram. Some of Joh's family used Totherow.
