Tourangeau - Danis
I recently discovered the connection of the surnames and I am new to the "Dit" concept of French names. I'm researching my Denny/Deney/Dany/Dana/Denney names as my family has been found with all spellings. They seem to originate in New York and behond that is totally unknown. I know that Danis can also be Dany or (St)Deny(s). Can anyone fill me in on the Tourangeau-Danis history?
My John Denny married Lucretta McNitt in the area of Ellisburg around 1832 and had four children. John's parents are a total unknown but a "Abraham Dana/Dany" could be his father also living in that area (family is found on 1825, 1830, 1835, 1840, 1855 and 1860 Census's in Jefferson Co NY)
My grandfather when living said we were French, Scotch and Dutch. I have even researched the Oneida Denny lines in hopes of connection - but very little to go on. I've hit a brick wall.
Many thanks for any info or insights on this Surname.
