Hi Angie;
I am a great-great-grandson of John Calvin Tow and wife Lucinda (Miller) Tow. John Calvin Tow didn't kill anybody.
He had a 1st cousin who killed his (the cousins) bro-in-law named Cox and I believe the old timers here in Oklahoma got the story mixed up especially since one of John Calvin Tows' sisters also married a Cox. But the two men (Cox) were not the same guy. John Calvin Tow WAS convicted of making counterfeit money in the late 1890s or so and spent some time at Huntsville Prison prior to coming to Oklahoma. The counterfeiting was also a "story" passed down in the family that turned out to be true.
Apparently some Tow families have a tradition or "story" passed down that there was some Indian blood. I never heard of that and it would have to be proven to me with documentation. Sometimes there is a little truth in the old stories handed down.....sometimes not. Like the supposed parentage of John B. Miller being the son of James Miller and (can't remember the first name) Roy. I think that parentage is highly suspect....especially since the little bit of documentation I have uncovered AND family tradition leans towards a Pennsylvania German background.
Sincerely;
Carl Martin
