Tower family geneology

I'm new to this sort of thing, but my father, Leonard Tower, has always told me stories about the Tower family going back to Mass. He grew up in western NY, but I know that his parents were originally from Michigan or something, and that there was a cousin in Minnesota (a "Charlemagne"). I also know the family came over shortly after the Mayflower, and a bunch of Mayflower families married with Towers. Some Towers then moved to Oregon. But that's all I know.

So here's the question: I'd like to get him some nice information about the family as a present for his 85th birthday. I know next to nothing, and he might know more, but he's a scientist, and arguably less than articulate when it comes to this sort of thing. Does anyone know where can I find some information for him, maybe in a form presentable as a gift?
