I think I found your James TOWLES. Estate File 41-19-449 Newberry Co., SC referenced in "Towles in S.C." by Leonardo Andrea, page 7, states that John TOWLES, a son of Capt Oliver TOWLES, died early and left two sons; James and John. The wife of this John TOWLES was named Sarah. John TOWLES estate was administered 2 May 1814, by Caleb LINDSEY (also related to the TOWLES family). In the Citation Sarah TOWLES and James TOWLES relinquished their right to Administer in favor of their friend Caleb LINDSEY. The fact that John's widow is listed and then James is a pretty good indication that he was the eldest son of John and Sarah. James is mentioned again in the estate of Caleb Lindsey (page 9) on 4 March 1816, where James TOWLES paid money into the estate.
Andrea (page 12)also shows a James TOWLES in Bryan Co., GA in 1830, 1840, 1850 (James TOWLES 59, Mary TOWLES 50... She was nee Mary WATTS) and in the 1860 Census(James TOWLES 60, Polly TOWLES 60).
He shows on page 13 James TOWLES born 7 Oct 1790 in 96 Dist., SC, died after 1860 in Georgia. He was married in Laurens County, S.C. before 1830 to MARY WATTS born in Laurens County, S.C. 23 Feb 1804 and died in Georgia after 1860. On page 14 there is a D.A.R. Magazine Query 12911 dated 1922 which talks about the TOWLES line as well.
Sorry I missed all of this the first time around! Regards, Keith
