Connie,
I checked all of my records and published genealogies that I have available, and the earliest (actually the only)Joseph TOWLES I could find was found in "Genealogies of Virginia Families, Vol V" from Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Indexed by Thomas L. Hollowak, published by Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc, Baltimore, 1981. This Joseph was born much earlier than the one you indicated in your post. Here is what I found:
3. STOKELEY2 TOWLES, of Midlesex Co, married Anne (VALLOT), and had issue:
9. John.3 There is no positive evidence as to the parentage of John Towles, but as he is married and lived in Middlesex, it is most probable that he was the eldest son of Stokeley2 Towles. It is true that his name is not given among Stokeley's children in the Christ Church Register, but the register is well known to be very incomplete; 10. Elizabeth, born Dec 19, 1716; 11. Ann, born April 23, 1719; 12. Catherine, born July 16, 1721; 13. Mary, born Nov 1, 1723; 14. Jane, born Feb 10, 1725; 15. Joseph, born Feb 3, 1727; 16. Frances, born May 8, 1730; 17. Judith, born April 13, 1735. I think my ancestor Oliver Towles is also in this family, having been born to John and Margaret Daniel Towles in Sep 1736. I believe the father John, grandfather Stokeley, brother Joseph and my Oliver TOWLES left Virginia in 1766 for Ninety Six District, SC, so I am not sure that we aren't looking for two different Joseph's. From what I have found, my Joseph served in the SC militia and died in SC in 1780 at the hands of the Tories. Wish I could be of more help Keith
