Hi Winnie,
Glad you're interested.I can't yet respond to your questions but I would like to note that as of the date of publication of the book (1942), the Townes Manuscripts cited (specifically the "Correspondance of Samuel Allen Townes, Henry Hall Townes, and others" was held privately by Mr. Harry Legare Watson of Greenwood, SC.
I don't know anything about Mr. Watson, but Greenwood is an hour "up the road" from me, so I'm curious.I hope his papers were given to the South Caroliniana Library in Columbia! When I have time, I'll try to check.
I'll return to your other queries soon.My vague understanding was that Lucretia Calhoun was a sister?? of John C., but my mind is a sieve, so I'll have to look for that.
Let's keep in touch. Later, Liz
