DEATH OF GEORGE FRANCIS TRAIN
New York. Jan 13--George Francis Train died last night at Mills’ hotel No. 1 where he has lived for some years.
Heart disease from which he died, followed the attack of acute nephritis.
George Frances Train will be recorded in history as the most eccentric character ever produced in this country.Prior to twenty years ago his name was constantly before the public. For the last thirty years he has led a retired life in New York City, his name only occasionally appearing in print. In the fall of 1902 he issued his last of many books of which he has been the author. It was an autobiography, containing many of the more important incidents of his life, and which he claimed to have dictated in thirty-five hours. The book was characteristic of the man.
George Francis Train was perhaps best known through his connection with the organization of the Credit Mobiller and the construction of the Union Pacific railroad, his organization of the French commune at Marsellies France, and three record breaking journeys which he made around the globe. The first of these trips he made in eighty days and he claims that Jules Verne two years later wrote fiction of his facts. That trip was made in 1870.The second trip was made in sixty-seven and one-half days in 1900.The third and shortest record was mad by him in 1902, making the journey in sixty days.
