The origin is probably lost in the mists. But the name was in England in the 1500'. An earlier researcher has tried to attach the family to an ancient French one: Tremaille. But no satisfactory proof or line of descent has been established. As for Ireland, I would imagine that some of them did go there and then come here as part of the scotch-irish emigration.
