Smith/ Moore/ Travis/ Mathews/ Rogers/ Rentfroe/ Cobb
I am trying to determine the connection between Alexander Smith(1849 - 1850 will in Fayette County, Georgia) and the children of Edward & Nancy Moore.
Both Edward & Nancy Moore were born in North Carolina, Edward 1796 in Nash County, NC, and Nancy in 1797 in NC. I do not know Nancy's maiden name.
Both Edward & Nancy Moore are presumed to have died in Fayette County, Georgia after 1860. They appear in the 1860 census of Fayette County and most of their children continued to live there.
Abstract of Alexander Smith will:
ALEXANDER SMITH 6/20/1849:3/4/1850, p. 86 89
Wife of 17 yrs, Patience. Sisters: Mary Matthews, Bethie Rogers.
Bros: James, Stephen,
WIlliam, Moses and Robert Matthews, ch of Mary Matthews. Fielding F. Matthews.
Martha Ann Travis widow of Columbus Travis; Mary Travis wife of Howard Travis; Elizabeth Travis wife of James; Patience Moore, dau of Edward;
Kitty Pope, wife of Hardy; Stephen Rentfroe.
Exr: WIlliam Matthews, nephew.
Wits: Dr. P. H. Brassell, John H. Whitley, John C. Brassell.
Part of the settlement:
William W. Matthews, Executor of the Estate of Alexander Smith, deceased, sold Land Lot 164 of the 6th District of Fayette County Georgia, pursuant to an order of the Court Of Ordinary (now Probate Court) to Hiram Travis. The
proceeds of the sale was divided among the remaindermen, the life estate of Patience Smith having ceased to exist upon her death.
The children of Edward & Nancy Moore:
1. Patience, born 1823 in Georgia (unmarried in 1849/50, time of the will)
2. Martha Ann Moore, born 05/08/1828 in Georgia, married 4/12/1846 to Columbus Travis, widowed about 1848.
3. Mary, born 5/8/1828 in Georgia, married Howard C. Travis about 1848.
4. Elizabeth, born 10/27/1830 in Georgia, married James Thomas Travis 4/11/1847.
Columbus, Howard C. and James Thomas Travis were all sons of Harbard Travis of Fayette County. Harbard Travis was a brother of Hiram Travis, purchaser of land lot 164 of the estate of Alexander Smith noted above.
William, Moses and Robert are evidently Alexander Smith's nephews, sons of sister Mary Smith Mathews. The other sister named was Bethie Rogers.
How are Kitty Pope, wife of Hardy, and Stephen Rentfroe connected?
I noticed that Alexander Smith's wife of 17 years was named Patience, the same name as Edward Moore's oldest daughter. Patience Moore would have been about 9 years old when Alexander Smith married Patience Cobb 2/14/1832 in Fayette County Georgia. Does this have any significance?
Could Nancy Moore have been a Alexander Smith's sister that he purposefully did not mention in his will?
Was Edward Moore previously married to Alexander Smith's deceased sister (the mother the Moore children), and Alexander did not mention said sister in his will? Thus Nancy would be Edward Moore's 2nd wife.
Is Alexander Smith's sister Bethie Rogers the divorced wife of Edward Moore, and the mother of the Moore children, Kitty Pope and Stephen Rentfroe?
None of the above?
I will certainly appreciate any help in sorting this out.
Thanks,
Jim
