Telena, Have just read your post. Most of the black Treadway's (all other Treadway spellings, also) took their last names of their owners (both before emancipation, and afterward). Have you checked the 1880 census records to see if you can find your grandparents listed there? Check for any Treadway's (et. al.) who are living in the same area. The census record will tell you where each person was born. [Please, remember, that not all people marked as black in the census records were black. Some of them were Indian, or not of the white race.] If you find your grandparents in the census you should be able to find court records (in the deeds office) of the states they had lived in [remember, blacks were considered property and any dealings concerning them, i.e purchase, sale, etc. was registered in deeds]. After you locate them in 1880 start searching backward thru the census records and you can probably locate earlier generations. Some cemetery records contain the gravesites of black persons, too. Sometimes church records will record their black members who were attached to the white members families. In many of the older generations the slaves didn't have a last name attached to them at all. When emancipation was enacted which ever family the slaves were living with assumed that surname. [The old wills are chock-full of slaves with only one name.]Some marriage records can be found that identify the parties as black. Some Quaker records (they don't mention the race) contain people who are black. While I am not black, I have just recently begun a research project to locate as many black "Treadway" families as I can and get their connections and lineages organized. I still have a lot of work to do. Every one has a right to know whom their ancestors were. I hope that you have success in building your lineage. It will be a hard road to follow but you can find a lot of information in the records. Good luck to you. Always a genealogical friend, Claudia Notify Administrator about this message?
