I am asking for help – anyone with any knowledge of the Hammer, Trogdon and Julian families, please excuse the length, but I’m hoping you may be able to assist me in locating some information. Recently, I was sent excerpts from a book titled “Ancestors and Descendants, 1630-2000: John Hammer of Prussia, Philadelphia County, PA, and Randolph County, N.C.,” by Harriette J. Hammer, published by Thomas and Ruth Hammer, 2000. This book states (page 16): “….Catherine Trogdon, daughter of Samuel and Abigail (Julian) Trogdon. The Cane Creek Monthly Meeting condemned his marriage out of unity (con mou) on 1787-9m 1d. On 1803, 3m 5d, Abraham Jr.,(Hammer) acknowledged his marriage out of unity and he and Catherine were admitted to membership. A month later, they received a certificate to Back Creek MM, NC. Abraham Jr., became a minister of Friends Society.
I have been searching for years to find proof of the date of marriage for Samuel Trogdon and Abigail Julian of 5 Oct. 1770, and have not located that documentation. Every mention of Samuel and Abigail, I try to delve as deep as I can. When I read the above information, I thought, let me go back to “The Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy” by William Wade Hinshaw and check out that information and see if I have missed something. I just assumed that the information above would have come from that publication. There is no mention of Samuel Trogdon, nor of Abigail Julian in Hinshaw’s books that I can find. I find Catherine Trogdon Hammer in Volume 1, page 467 only, Holly Spring Monthly Meeting, mentioning Catherine, Abraham Jr., and their children.
On Page 82 of the above book, it states Catherine was the “daughter of a wealthy land owner Samuel Trogdon who married Abigail Julian. He gave his oldest daughter, Catherine, and her new husband, Abraham Hammer, Jr., a 160 acre plantation as a wedding present.” This came as a surprise to me, I was not familiar with that information. The next question I asked myself, when did Abraham and Catherine truly marry? According to the one mention of Catherine in Hinshaw’s book, their first child was born in 1798, but no marriage date.
This marriage question led me to the book “William and His Seed,” by Beulah Costello. The date of marriage in this book is 1 Sept., 1792 at Cane Creek Monthly Meeting. Well, we know that can’t be, based on the above! Then I decided I needed to look at the land, maybe this would give me something, anything. I had never heard the story of the wedding gift, but I wanted to know if this was so. A trip to the Register of Deeds office confirmed something for me – the more I find, the less I know! Abraham Hammer, Jr., BOUGHT 200 acres of land from Samuel Trogdon in 1804 for 40 pounds and there were no existing property lines of Abraham’s that this property adjoined (that would have led me to believe the wedding gift statement). I did find 6 acres of land purchased in 1793 by Abraham Hammer, Jr., and there were other land conveyances back to 1787 I believe, so the 1793 document wasn’t the “first” Hammer transaction indexed. I believe a prior conveyance by Abraham and Samuel would have been indexed. 160 acres of land as a wedding gift?
In my search, the library in Randolph County, NC has a book, “Ancestors and Descendants 1683-1983, Abraham Hammer of Philadelphia County, PA and Randolph County, NC, by Harriette J. Hammer.” I found the exact quote regarding the marriage being condemned, the dates the same, wording the same. In that 1st book, I found the language that Catherine was the “daughter of a wealthy land owner who gave his daughter the farm on which the Hammer family farmed and lived. The second book states the land was 160 acres.
With that lengthy background, here is where I ask for help – I am looking for the documentation for the paragraph which states the marriage was condemned by Cane’s Creek and that they received their certificate a month later, etc. The statements are very date specific and I desperately want to believe they are fact, I just need to locate the documents that prove the statements, which I cannot find. Is anyone aware of updated minutes for Hinshaw’s books, or can you guide me to some other Quaker records that may prove the statements of the condemned marriage at Cane Creek, the certificate to Back Creek and the dates. This won’t help my mystery of documentation to verify the marriage date of Samuel and Abigail, but it will put this newest mystery to rest and all of us Trogdon researchers will know the information above is not correct. I have gone as far as my knowledge base is able to go. I plan to visit Hege Library at Guilford College to research the microfilmed original meeting minutes, but that, of course, is going to take some time.

No, I will do a back flip and then call 911 immediately because Life Flight would HAVE to be involved in the transfer. I would also like to be able not only tell Trogdon researchers (myself included) that the Cane Creek marriage for Catherine and Abraham is not only wrong, but there has been new information found. I want to believe the information above - the marriage, the land, the dates, all of it, it seems so possible and so specific, I just need help finding the proof and I have exhausted my resources.
