Original spelling is Drollinger in church books in Ellmendingen which begin 1618. Wendelin was a Judge for the Crown Prince of Baden. The Droellinger is a mispelling. There is also a wine grape known as Trollinger which is a red grape and produces a wine similar in taste to a chianti. This would lend some anecdotal evidence to the belief that the name was originally Tyroliger or Tiroliger, literally man from Tyrol. This evolved to Trollinger and then to Drollinger. The most famed of the name was Karl Friedrich Drollinger 1688 1745 who was a poet, historian and judge for the Crown Prince of Baden and followed him into exile when the French invaded. His portrait hangs in the University of Basel Switzerland.
