Dear Jan
It's Thomas and Hannah (Walker), not Elizabeth. I sent the sketchy family tree to Trevors grandmother sometime in the past, and it probably hasn't travelled well. And I'll also learn to write proper, one day. But not today.
The Thomas T. and Mary Burney at the top of the tree are as far back as I have been able to get, and I have tried very hard over the past 30 years. There are not many parish registers or Bishops Transcripts in Cumberland that either myself or Margaret Trohear in Cumbria have not scanned through. There are many Troughears recorded prior to that of course back to the 1500's, however, none that I can identify as Thomas's parents. There is a clue of an old lady, Elizabeth, who lived in Parton village in Moresby parish at the same time, possibly with Thos/Mary Burney, but even she seems to have appeared from nowhere.
We are related distantly. Trevor's Gt. Grandfather John (marr. Ada McNichol) was my grandfather's brother (Herbert).
The photograph you refer to was a copy from one kept in an album by Herbert's wife Polly Dixon, which I have. Polly, my grandmother, was almost blind later in life and the notes she wrote in the album are faded and almost illegible. She also had many photos of her childhood family friends in Cumberland, and it is difficult to separate the direct family from her friends and defacto aunts and uncles. From the note in the album, the photo of the man standing in the field behind two horses and plough is most likely James McCormick, from Ireland, who is Trevor's Gt Gt Gt Grandfather. He worked at Tallentire as a husbandman (farm labourer), and lived nearby at Papcastle. This is the only old photograph of the Troughear side that Polly had, the others are on her (Dixon side), not related to Trevor's line.
We are also related to Lel Hanking, on this list. Lel's grandmother (Hetty)was the sister of Trevor's Grandfather, Thomas.
Sorry for mixing you and trevor up with the OTHER Jan and Trevor Troughear in NewZealand. There can't be many more J & T's in the world with this surname.
I'll finish now because the Walmart window keeps popping up, which is not terribly relevant outside the USA, and it's getting annoying.
regards
Richard
