Linda, thanks for the lead. I'll check it out. It fits well with the information I've gathered from other sources over the past 4 months.

Peter C. Troyer, my great grandfather was listed (age 89) in the 1900 Census in Union County, Oregon as well. Sounds as though the John Troyer you've referenced(if he is the right age), may be Peter's son John.
