There is an obituary for Rose's mother, Elizabeth, in the Dubuque Daily Telegraph, 23 Jul 1901 - "Death has claimed another aged resident, Mrs. Elizabeth Hartsock, who died yesterday, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jos Trudell, 1220 Bluff street... Mrs. Hartsock had lived in Dubuque 56 years and was well known among our oldest settlers. Her husband, who died several years ago, opened up the first wagon-maker shop in Dubuque.. A large number of children were born to the couple but all but one are dead, Mrs. Trudell, at whose home Mrs. Hartsock died being her only survivor... She was a devout Catholic.. was 83 years of age."

According to the 1900 Census, Mary S. Trudell was born Feb 1863 Iowa, and had been married to Egbert in 1884. Egbert was a letter carrier for the US Post Office. Here she is in 1880 in Sioux City with parents Joseph & Sophia Trudell & family:
