Sally
I saw your message on the Truett web page.
Trewhitt is probably not Cornish though the possible Cornish derivation is an attractive on.'Tre..' is a clearing in a forrest and '..whitt' is a skylark.Unfortunately the oldest references to Trewhitt are to the place name near Rothbury in Northumberland, and as a surname it was not very uncommon in the south west.Trewhitts are mainly to be found on the eastern side of England and the two derivations I have come across that are most likely are from the Norse 'a field in a bend in a river', and Anglo-Saxon 'resinous wood'.
There have not been many Scottish Trewhitts and the only recent one I can trace is aJack (John Anthony) Trewhitt (my first cousin twice removed) who was manager of the Edinburgh Theater Royal.
Peter Trewhitt
