After I read this post I was lucky enough to track down the person who purchased the Bible, and he sold it to me. He was not related to the family, but Curtis and Lettitia are my direct ancestors. This is an expanded transcription of the original as it appears to me. Many thanks to Michael, whose post I saw very late one night when I couldn’t sleep and who lead me to this marvelous piece of my family history.
Regarding the spelling of Lettitia West Tucker’s name:
The Bible is inscribed “Lettitia Tucker, 1848“, which was the year the Bible was published. I have seen Lettitia’s name spelled many ways (and differently even in this Bible), and I list these spellings here for anyone who may search them online: Letitia, Leatitia, Leutisa, Luticia, Laetetia, Laetesa, Latitia and Letetia. On the inscription page, the name was started as “Lete” and then crossed out and written as “Lettetia“, so apparently even the person who wrote the inscription had trouble with the spelling. Both the crossed out version and the final version are in the same handwriting as the earliest entries.
