Oh my goodness, I just almost fell off my chair, having only just caught up with this message! John Partridge Tunstall snr. was born 1810 in Romford, son of John Tunstall and Francis Partridge (it is interesting to note that the name is spelt TURNSTILE on the parish registers). John Tunstall was a linen draper in Romford, Essex, and Frances his wife was the daughter of Thomas Partridge of Gt. Yelham, gent. (also in Essex). I have a copy of Thomas Partridge's will which names John Tunstall (his son-in-law)as an executor of his will. If anyone is interested, John Partridge snr. was living in Cheltenham, Gloucester, England in 1881, he was 65, a Retired Merchant and born in Romford, Essex. His wife Enily, is 49 and born in Jersey, Channel Islands. The address is 12 Imperial Square. Other children are, Lilian aged 12 born in Hampstead, London, and Mabel aged 10 also born in Hampstead. They seem to be reasonably affluent as the children have a Governess. I would think there would have been other children, as Emily would have been 21 when she had John Henry, and 37 when she had Lilian. I have a particular interest in the Tunstalls of Essex, as I am descended from them through both my maternal and paternal sides as my parents are cousins, and all the Tunstalls in Essex are related. I have found Tunstalls in Essex as far back as the 1500s, and these originally came from County Durham in the north of England. In turn these were a branch of the Tunstalls who originated in the place Tunstall and Thurland Castle. The name is relatively uncommon in the south of England, but I am sure they all originated from the northern ones. I have heard that the American Tunstalls started with one Edmund Tunstall who evidently came from County Durham and was connected with the tobacco trade, hence the American Tunstalls seem to start in Virginia.
I am visiting England at the end of August and intend to go to Thurland Castle which is still there and open to the public.
I do agree that all the Tunstalls are probably 'related' somewhere along the line, what a huge tree we could have!!
