Descendants of Richard Turbeville
Generation No. 1
1. RICHARD1 TURBEVILLE was born Abt. 1667 in Wales, and died 1725 in North Hampton County, North
Carolina. He married ELIZABETH ANNE. She was born Bef. 1677.
Notes for RICHARD TURBEVILLE:
Prince George County records (VA) reveal that in the 1704 "Rent Roll of all the lands held in the County, the
following names were listed: Richard Turberfield
When Richard Turbeville and his family moved to NC they lived on the Occoneechee with other Chicksaw
traders. (This area in NC is just over the VA border.)
One of the first families to live at Sandy Bluff, SC was the Turbevilles. NC records show that between 1713 and
1726 the Turbevilles had lived on the Occoneechee Neck of the Morattuck (Roanake) River (in present day
Northhampton County.)
As Chickaswaw traders, the Colsons and Turbevilles had the means and opportunity to take James Logan Colbert
to the Chickasaw Nations as a small boy.
_____________________________________________________________________
4 December 1725 - Richard Turbeville had written his last will and testament. An abstract follows:
Wife Anne Turbavell - plantation where I now live for her lifetime.
Eldest son John Turbavell - plantation and land where Jacob Colson now lives on the west side of Reedy Run.
Second son Francis Turbavell - 100 acres on the south side of the Moratuck River in a survey of land bough of
John Lax.
Third son William Turbavell - land were he now lives, to be divided from the Piney Meadow across the survey.
Fourth son Walter Turbavell - plantation where I now live after his mother's death.
Daughter Elizabeth Turbavell - cows and calves, etc. less than one year after the death of her mother.
Grandson Daniel Colson and Granddaughter Mary Colson - cow and calf each to be paid them when they are 21.
Children of RICHARD TURBEVILLE and ELIZABETH ANNE are:
i. JOHN2 TURBEVILLE.
ii. FRANCIS TURBEVILLE.
iii. WILLIAM TURBEVILLE, b. 1767.
Notes for WILLIAM TURBEVILLE:
The most noteworthy of the Turbevilles at Sandy Bluff, SC, according to the Rev. Alexander Gregg, was
William Turbeville. The Rev. Gregg said, "Mr. Turbeville had no children. Several brothers came with him, of
whom some descendants are now in Marion County. The Rev. William Turbeville came with this colony and
had a high reputation as a preacher. He was a well educated man. (Let me say at this point that Sandy Bluff
was on the Pee Dee River in present day Marion County, SC.)

iv. WALTER TURBEVILLE.
2. v. ABSALOM TURBEVILLE.
3. vi. ELIZABETH TURBEVILLE, b. Abt. 1705.
Generation No. 2
2. ABSALOM2 TURBEVILLE (RICHARD1) He married LUCRETIA LUCY WHITE.
Notes for ABSALOM TURBEVILLE:
There was a widow Lucy (White) of an
Absalom (aka Soloman) Turbeville, who married
second a Mr. Windham or Windom or Wickom or
Wickham. (Windham and Wickham appear to be
interchangeable, like Turbeville and Troublefield,
in Marion records.)
Lucy Windham filed a petition with the South Carolina
state legislature in 1802 for a pension as a widow of a
Revolutionary soldier (Absalom Turbeville (as named in petition),
killed in May 1782)).
Marion District, SC, land records (early 1800's) indicate "lands of the estate of Solomon Troubleville" (alias
Turbeville) who may actually be the same man as "Absalom" mentioned in Lucy Windham's petition. Solomon
was born in 1751 to Charles and Susannah (Saunders/Sanders) Turbeville. There are no
Revolutionary war military records (other than Lucy's petition) that mention the service of either an Absalom or a
Solomon
Turbeville (under any spelling of the last
name).
I don't know the first name of the Windham
married to Lucy.
Marion Co., SC, probate records for the estates of Thomas Turbeville (alias Troublefield,
etc.) and his widow Winnifred "Winney"
(White?), about 1804 and 1805 refer to Lucy
Windham and Lucy Wickom and Lucy Windom as
one of the persons involved in settlement of
the estates and care of two minor children of
the couple: Peter and Elizabeth Turbeville.
