John Louis Neyland died 30 March 1867, or was killed, while on a visit from Leon County, Texas to visit his son, James Smiley Neyland, who had married my great, great grandfather, Jasper Hamilton Jones' niece. He was killed because of the political feud going on there at the time. John Louis had left Angelina County because the feud was becoming so violent, but in 1867, the Civil War being over he thought it safe to visit his children still in Angelina County. His death caused all of the Neylands to leave Angelina County for good. James Smiley Neyland , born 2 Oct 1838, Amite Co., Miss., died 1921 in the Redland Community, he married Lucinda Brashears on 10 June 1858, Angelina Co., Tx. , daughter of Sheriff James M. Brashears and Mary Maribe Jones. Lucinda was born 15 Feb 1838, Old Royal Colony, White County, Arkansas, where the Jones and Brashears had stopped awhile on their trek from Tennessee to Texas. Mary Maribe Jones parents were Martin William "Gobbler" Jones and Rhoda Hodges, who married 1804, Jefferson County, Tennessee. Martin was the first state Representative from White Co., Ark., when Arkansas became a state. He and his family estabilished Old Jonesville, near present day Huntington, in Angelina County in the mid 1840's. John Louis Neyland's wife, Elizabeth later moved from Leon County to Karnes Co., Texas where she died on 14 Nov 1899. James Smiley and Lucinda are both buried in Centerville cemetery, Leon Co., TX. The Jones Family are my mother's kin, but my Daddy was kin to about half of Leon County, especially the Evans Family. I do not know much about John Louis Neyland's father, but I have addresses for many of the Neylands in Leon Co., as I send them invitations to the Jones Reunion at Huntington, Texas, when we have them.
