AUSTIN AND SUTHERLIN/SUTHERLAND FAMILY
Posted by: Linda Hood Austin (ID *****7349) Date: January 07, 2004 at 16:46:36

Rumors say about 1864-1870 several Austin brothers were chased out of Texas for horse rustling and crossed the Mississippi River. The possee turned back for Texas and the brothers rested for a while with a relative in Ms. One brother named John William Austin bn. 1839 in ? saw Mary Elizabeth Sutherland bn. 1849, 10 yrs. younger than he, but he fell in love with her, and when he and his brothers left, they took Mary Elizabeth with them and came into mid-Alabama. Mary Elizabeths' family said they would kill John William Austin if they ever found him, so the brothers split up for protection. One brother went to Ga., one to Tn., etc. This couple gave conflicting information to the census takers or anyone needing information. Mary Elizabeth Sutherland Austin's pictures look very Native American. Names for the brothers may have been Rock Austin and Dred Austin. This may be nothing but RUMORS, but if anything sounds familiar, please email me. Thanks
