Anderson Jones Peeler, Jr, Rev. was one of the most eminent member of the Texas bar, was born in Harris County, GA. on 22nd of April, 1838. When he was about ten years of age he immigrated with his father's family (Rev James Peeler) to Florida, where he resided until 1873, when he removed to Austin, TX. At the outbreak of the War between the states , he immediately entered the Army and served first under Greneral Bragg at Pensacola, and afterwards under General Lee in Virginia until the battle of Gettysburg July 1, 1863, in which he was wounded and taken prisoner. At the time of his capture he was First Lieutenant in Company I of the 5th Regiment in Florida Infantry, and had served for a long time as Adjutant of that regiment. For several days previous to the battle he acted as aide-de-camp to Col. Long, who was in command of the Florida Brigade.

On the second day of the battle, and just before the order to charge was given, Lt, Peeler, who was mounted, was sent to bring forward some men who had been stationed a short distance from the main line of battle. He returend with them just as the charge was begun, in which he joined, and went through the fight on horseback until he was wounded, being the only mounted officer in command. Of his gallantry on that occasion, and also at the battle of Chancellorsville, much was said by his comrades and the newspapers of the time. Having remained for more than a month at Camp Litterman Hospotal, which was extablisher near the battlefield, and afrerwards a short time at West's hospital in Baltimore, He was sent with a large number of other Confederate Officers to Johnson's Island in Lake Erie, where he was confined as a prisoner of war until a short time before the surrender of General Lee at Appomattox. Besides the Battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, he participated in the Battle of Fredericksburg and other other fights in the hard fought fields of Virginia. On his release from prison, he returned to his home at Tallahassee, resumed his profession, and engaged vigorously in the great struggle whic was then common to all Southern People--to procure meat and bread for them-selves and families

He was promoted to Colonel on the battlefield of Gettysburg. At that time he was a young man about 25 years of age. He removed to Texas in 1873, and settled at Austin, TX, and practiced law until his death in 1886. He was the author of Peeler's Law and Equity in the US courts, and conducted some of the heaviest litigation in Texas, and was looked upon as truly a great lawyer.
Anderson Jones Peeler was married to Elizabeth Frances Walker Byrd 1857 and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery Austin, Travis County, TX
