I am searching for any living descendants of William Cannon who died in Bastrop County Texas on 19 December 1851. I beleive that he and his first wife Mary (Morgan)
Cannon were my gg grandparents. William Cannon was born in 1795 in Ireland. Mary Morgan was born in South Carolina also about 1795. They were teenagers when they
married. I beleive that theirs was the family listed in the 1820 Hall County, Georgia census. I know that they were the family listed in the Limestone County, Alabama 1830 census. Persons proven to be children of this couple are: Charles M(organ?) Cannon, born ca 1818 probably in Georgia and William R. Cannon, born ca 1825 in either Georgia or Alabama.
It is my opinion that this couple had three other children born in Hall County, Georgia and listed in the 1820 census there. They were Elijah Cannon, born ca 1810 and died
December 26, 1879 in Lincoln County, Tennessee; my great grandfather, Almon Cannon, born June 13, 1812, died in Bedford County, Tennessee August 18, 1896 and Margaret
Cannon, born ca 1814. All three of these persons were in Bedford County, Tennessee in the early 1830s. Limestone County, Alabama and Lincoln County, Tennessee share a
common border. Bedford County, Tennessee was a parent county for Lincoln County,Tennessee on its creation in 1809.
A Limestone County record for William Cannon is a bill of sale recorded in Book 3,page 24 in which William Cannon sold to Francis English a negro slave named Joe who
was about 26 years old. Sales price $650.
In Limestone County, Alabama Deed Book 5, pages 227 and 228 is recorded a deed which was made in New Orleans, Louisana on 6th of February 1835. In this deed
William Cannon is selling to Nathaniel Terry, both of whom are listed as being from Limestone County, Alabama four (4) lots located in the town of Mooresville, Alabama.
They were town lots numbered 13, 14, 19 and 20.
William Cannon's first wife, Mary (Morgan) Cannon died in Limestone County, Alabama in 1831 or 1832 This fact along with her name was learned in a Bastrop County Court
record of a suit filed by William Cannon's second wife against William R. Cannon the administrator of William Cannon's estate. Mary Morgan Cannon's burial site was not
identified. This second wife was named Agnes K. Garrison or Patterson and they married in Alabama about 1832. (NOTE BY Douglas Foster this second marriage may have been
a point of contention between William Cannon and his children. It may have been why so little has been revealed by Almon and Elijah about their parents. It is evident from the testimony in the Bastrop County suit that William R. Cannon had little love for his stepmother even though he must have lived with her for a period of time during the early days while his father and brother, Charles, were in Texas.)
William Cannon owned land in Bastrop County, Texas as early as March 29, 1835. He and son, Charles M. Cannon were mustered into the Company of Volunteers, Zaval
Guards commanded by Captain Abraham Marshall on 16 May 1836. Charles M. Cannon was listed as age 18 of Mooresville, Alabama, enlisted for the war. William Cannon's muster record showed the same 16 May 1836 date and note stated "He joined the Service in Capt.
McCllellen's (partially too faint to read) has been upon detached service and has not joined this company until now. William Cannon was shown as age 41 at the time of the
Muster.
William Cannon lived in Texas for the rest of his life. He was listed in the 1837, 1840 and 1841 tax rolls and 1850 Federal Census of Bastrop County, Texas. He died in
Bastrop, Texas in December 1851. His son, William R. Cannon was appointed his administrator. He evidently speculated heavily in land throughout his life in Texas.
Charles M. Cannon After his military service for the Republic of Texas I have found little information on him. He died at an unknown location Bef. February 05, 1846. On
that date a deed recorded in Caldwell County, TX Book E, pages 18-19 from the estate of Charles M. Cannon, deceased, left a third of a league of land in Bastrop County to his heirs. His father, William Cannon, as his sole heir claimed this land. It is possible that
Charles M. Cannon returned to Alabama in 1839 and remained and died there. (see below)
William R. Cannon: When his father, William Cannon and older brother Charles Cannon left Alabama in 1835, they left William R. and the homestead in the care of Alice
K. Cannon. The father, William Cannon returned to Alabama in 1839 and moved his wife and son to the Republic of Texas. After settling his father's estate William R.
Cannon moved to Hays County, Texas. He married Maria L. Rousseau, daughter of Moses Rousseau. They had two sons: William Cannon, born ca 1850 and Charles R. Cannon, born ca 1856. On 14 February 1874 in Hays County, Texas a William Cannon and C. R. Cannon deeded to Franks, W. L. & J. N. Goforth, W. J. (Deed Book "I" page 452. I assume these are the sons of William R. Cannon and Maria Rousseau Cannon.
William R. Cannon died Bef. September 13, 1858. His widow remarried in Bastrop County on May 15 1860 to William T. Allen or Aldem. Charles Cannon, son of William R. may have married Laura Roberts.
