Captain Jeremiah BROWN was the brother of William S. BROWN, another captain of the Texas Navy. Jeremiah had come to Texas from Rhode Island in 1830. He listed his occupation as a mariner. In Velasco on 25 December 1837, Jeremiah and Rebecca B. SPRAGGINS (who were married earlier by bond on 10 May 1833) were married, I. C. HOSKINS, J.P. 3rd District, officiating.
Yes, Rev. Thomas SPRAGGINS, a Baptist minister, and "Daddy" SPRAGGINS were one and the same. Jeremiah and Rebecca ran a hotel in Velasco and it was there in July 1838 that a Presbyterian minister stayed there and was introduced to "Daddy Spraggins, a Hardshell Baptist preacher."
Jeremiah's estate was filed October 18, 1838. On 10 December 1839 Thomas SPRAGGINS officiated at a wedding. His wife may be buried in the old cemetery at Velasco.
