Holmes, a Negro, wanted in Brazos County on a charge of assault with attempt to murder, alleged to have been committed on another Negro, Lige Redding, near Harvey some time ago. Holmes appeared before Justice McGee this morning and was allowed bond in the sum of $250. Dallas Morning News, January 25, 1907, p.13 “Two Negroes Dead, Two are Wounded, at Reddin Supper,” Bryan Daily Eagle, 3 September 1917, p.3, col.3. Charles Peddeford and Simon Reddin were killed. “Bryan Briefs,” Houston Informer, 28 May 1932, p.5, col.1. Mrs. Roberta Reddan of College Station died; W.H. Haynes died ** Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Bryan (also known as Second Baptist Church) FORD, Michael Dwain, Up from Cotton -- This church was organized in 1893 by a group of ex-slaves, who had migrated from Alabama to Texas and who had settled at Stone City. They later moved the church into Bryan. Brazos Co. Deeds of Trust Book 15, pp.156-159 (1941): S.B. REDDEN, S. MARTIN, G.B. BANKS, J.H. TURNER, Jeff TURNER, D.L. BISOR & Cyrus NEBLETT, church deacons, gave a deed of trust to W.S. World War I Draft Registration Records (from Ancestry) Duren, Charles Edward, Jr.; son of Charles E. Duren & Viola Bowen; born 15 Nov.1907(see: Brazos Co. Texas Births 1850-1910) Duren, Rolan; owned lot 3 in block 186 in Bryan. 1894 Brazos County Tax Roll Morgan Levi, colored, was shot and instantly killed by his stepfather, Roland Duren, also colored, at Duren’s home near Steep Hollow yesterday afternoon. Duren used a shotgun loaded with small shot, but was near Levi and the entire load entered his left breast near the heart, killing him instantly … (article continues at length) … Duren is well known in Bryan and is the father of Charlie Duren, the well known colored piano player of this city. Bryan Daily Eagle, 15 Jan. 1915, p.3, col.2. In a difficulty in a Negro pool hall on North Main street this morning, Charley Duren, the well known Negro piano player, was stabbed through the jaw by Cicero Shivers. Shivers was arrested, but says he was only playing with Duren. Bryan Daily Eagle, 10 Apr. 1915, p.5, col.5. Charles During, a well known colored musician, died Saturday morning at 1 o’clock. He leaves a wife and three children. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Charles had made arrangements with John Daly, Jr., to play for the K.C. minstrel Monday night and a few hours before his death expressed the hope that he would be able to do so. He had many friends among the white and colored people of Bryan who regret to learn of his death. Bryan Daily Eagle, 24 Apr. 1920, p.1, col.3. Wrighting?, Syleria?, Mrs. - - no entry 9 Aug. 1923 This is probably: The 1880 Brazos County Census, p.348c, lists: Writen, Ed 30 laborer Texas , Sylvia 34 k house Mississippi McIntosh, Asa 19 son , Nelia 14 daughter (plus more children) The 1900 Brazos County Census, ED 9, sheet 11b, lists: Wrighton, Sylvia 45 wid MS cook & washing , Fannie 21 dau teacher The 1910 Brazos County Census, ED 9, sheet 17a, lists: Wrighten, Sylvia 56 wid mother of 5 children Mississippi **** One other note: Brazos County Deed Book M, p.203: Jack Durham (f.m.c) & his wife Mariah Durham sold land for $40 to Noon Pillow (race not stated); was part of land sold to Jack Durham by H.
