Thank you so much for all your help! I actually have a faded photograph of Dr. Canfield. His widow lived with her sister Sarah Sloan Marchbanks in Beaumont for several years. MY grandmother lived there also for a time, and she remembered that Mrs. Canfield sewed her own shroud while she was there! The Canfields did not have any children.
I recently found out that A.R. was a surgeon in the Civil War, and that his wife applied for a widow's pension in Texas. I need to write and get a copy of that.
Thanks again for opening a window into the past.
