Hi, I'm looking for help in finding more information on a "Mary Jane Kirby", who mysteriously moved from Washington DC to Brownwood, TX sometime during or after 1902 (when her husband Dr. Edmund Wesley Kirby died.) [She's been known both as "Jane" and "Mary". She was born ca. 1837 in Pennsylvania, as were her parents. Her maiden name was "Hartley" or "Harltey". From a couple records it is ambiguous whether or not she was married before marrying Edmund Kirby in 1894 and then moving to Washington, DC.] The evidence I have is a business card, where in handwriting a "Mrs." is prepended before "Dr. E.W. Kirby", and the Washington DC address is stricken, replaced by "507 Clark Street, Brownwood, Tex". This is all a strange mystery as so far I have no family connection of Mary Jane Kirby to Texas (as noted she and her parents were born in Pennsylvania -- and no ties of Edmund Kirby to Texas, either.) And in 1902 she was already quite aged, 65 years old, so that is quite a move to make at that age. There is a curious 1910 Census record for Brownwood, TX, which shows a "Mary J. Staggs", born ca 1838 in Pennsylvania, married for three years to a "T.N. Staggs" (born ca. 1827). This may or may not be her, but one lead to consider. Any help untangling this mystery will be most appreciated! Thanks. Jon Noring jon (at) noring.name Notify Administrator about this message?
