G.W. Shell, of Burnet County, Briggs post office, applied for a pension in Texas on 18 July 1913. It was approved 1 Dec 1913, filed 30 Jan 1914 and effective from 1 March 1914 until his death 8 July 1915. His wife, Mrs. M.C. Shell, then applied for a widow's pension on 16 Sept 1915 and received it from 1 Dec 1915 until her death 26 July 1923.

The State of Texas, County of Burnet
I, George W. Shell, do hereby make application to the Commissioner of Pensions for a pension to be granted me under the Act passed by the thirty-first Legislature of the State of Texas, and approved April 7, 1913, on the following grounds:
I enlisted and served in the military services of the Confederate States during the war between the States of the United States, and that I did not desert the Confederate services, but during said war I was loyal and true to my duty, and never at any time voluntarily abandoned my post of duty in the said service; that I was a prisoner of war in a federal prison at Look Out Md, at the close of the war, was captured at Bristow Station VA, in October 1864.
that I have been a bona fide citizen of this State since prior to Jan 1, A.D. 1900, and have been continuously since a citizen of the State of Texas. I do further state that I do not hold any national, State, city or county office which pays me a salary or fees one hundred and fifty dollars per annum, nor have I an income from any other employment or other source whatever, which amounts to one hundred and fifty dollars per annum, nor do I receive from any source whatever money or other means of support amounting in value to the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars per annum, nor do I own in my own right, nor does any one hold in trust for my benefit or use, nor does my wife own, nor does any one hold in trust for my wife, estate or property, either real, personal or mixed, either in fee or for life, of the assessed value of over one thousand dollars; nor do I receive any aid or pension from any other State, or from the United States, or from any other source, and that I am not an inmate of the Confederate Home, and I do further state that the answers given to the following questions are true:
1. What is your age? Seventy Five years
2. Where were you born? Caldwell Co. N.C.
3. How long have you resided in Texas? Seventeen years
4. In what county do you reside? Burnet County
5. How long have you resided in said county and what is your postoffice address? Since 1896. P.O. Briggs, Texas
6. Have you applied for a pension under the Confederate pension law and been rejected? No
7. What is your occuption, if able to engage in one? House Carpenter
8. In what State was the command in which you served organized? North Carolina
9. How long did you serve? Give, if possible, the date of enlistment and discharge. About 4 years. Enlisted in April 1861. Served until close of war.
10. What was the letter of your company, number or name of battalion, regiment or battery? Company "I" 26th North Carolina Infantry
11. If transferred from one command to another, give time of transfer, name of command and time of service. no transfers
12. What branch of the service did you enlist in--infantry, cavalry, artillery or navy? Infantry
13. If commissioned direct by the President, what was your rank and line of duty? Not commissioned, served as a private
14. If detailed for special service, under the law of conscription, what was the nature of your service and how long did you serve? not detailed under conscript law
15. Have you transferred to others any property of any kind for the purpose of becoming a beneficiary under this law? no

Shell, the above named applicant for a pension, and that they personally know that the said G. W. Shell has been a bona fide resident citizen of the State of Texas since prior to January 1, A.D. 1900, and that they have no interest in this claim.

I have the honor to request the military record of George W. Shell, who is reported to have enlisted in Company "I", Regiment 26th N.C. Infantry in the service of the Confederate States Army.
Purpose: The person above named is an applicant for a Confederate pension granted by the State, and I desire to verify his proof of service.

C. A. Tuttle answers to the accompanying interrogations propounded to him in the above entitled cause taken before W.C. Moore, Jr., CSC in accordance with the accompanying agreement. To the first interrogatory, the said C. A. Tuttle, witness, answers:
1. What is your name? Age?
C. A. Tuttle. Sixty nine years old.
2. Do you personally know, or did you at any time know G.W. Shell, who is an applicant for pension under Act of April 1913?
Yes. for years before the late war between the States.
3. How long have you known the said G.W. Shell applicant for pension and when and where did you first know him?
First knew him in Caldwell County, N.C.
4. Do you personally know that the said G.W. Shell applicant for pension enlisted in the service of the Confederacy, and performed the duties of a soldier?
Yes. GW Shell belonged to Co. I 26th N.C.
5. Do you personally know in what company and regiment the said G.W. Shell applicant, enlisted and served in the Confederate Army? When? Where? And the time of service?
In Co. I 26 N.C. regiment. don't know date of enlistment, but think was about year 1862.
Cross Interrogatories.
1. If, in answer to the foregoing direct interrogatories, you have stated that you personally know or did know said applicant, and that you know that he enlisted in the service of the Confederacy and performed the duties of a soldier, and having named the company and regiment in which applicant so enlisted and served, then please state fully what is your source of such knowledge? And state whether or not you know or at any time you knew of any other soldier by the name of G.W. Shell serving in the same company or regiment in which you say the said applicant G.W. Shell enlisted. If you say that you so knew other soldiers of the same name of applicant's, then can you and how do you identify and locate the one from the other or others?
ANSWER: Did not know but one G.W. Shell
2. are you positively certain that said G.W. Shell applicant for pension, is the identical person serving as testified by you?
ANSWER: I know the G.W. Shell that I knew moved to Texas and I have heard indirectly from him and have every reason to believe he is the same person.

4. Do you know whether or not the said G.W. Shell applicant for pension, ever deserted the service in the Confederate army?
ANSWER: He did not desert to my knowledge and never heard that he did.

Mrs. Gussie Viola Hart, wife of William F. Hart of Marble Falls, died Saturday, August 22nd in the Allen Clinic and Hospital in Burnet.
Mrs. Hart was born September 17, 1883 in North Carolina. Mrs. Hart lived for many years near Briggs, moving in 1937 from Briggs to Marble Falls. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon, August 23rd in the Clements Funeral Home in Burnet, with Minister Raymond DeSpain of Elgin officiating. Interment was in the Mahomet Cemetery under the direction of the Clements Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were T.O. Shell, Joe Shell, Jesse Hart, Orville Hart, Clyde Taylor and Leonard Ottinger.
Survivors are her
--husband, William F. Hart of Marble Falls,
--one daughter, Mrs. George M. Becker of Marble Falls,
--three sons, Victor F. Hart and Bill Hart of Marble Falls, and L.E. Hart of San Antonio
