This has been a mystery.
the name spelled Liedhegener is the original spelling.
My family's spelling is Liedhegner due to my gr grandmother deciding it was too many letters. !
My gr grandfather was Harry Liedhegener (m. Teresa Fisher), and his father was Anton Liedhegener. My family is from Covington, KY, Kenton County.
I have a feeling there is a connection to the Liethegeners in St. Louis, MO.
I have always wondered where Margaret fit in.
As you said, the spellings have been 'butchered' over the years.
